The John Lachman Society 2004 Summer News Letter

Dear Member:

The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that all organizational and legal matters pertaining to The John Lachman Society are either in place or pending. We would like to bring you up to date regarding projects and programs planned for the coming academic year,

JOHN LACHMAN LECTURE: The inaugural John Lachman Lecture will be held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society annual meeting on Friday, November 11, 2004 at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. David Apple, MD, medical director of the Shepherd Spine Center in Atlanta, Georgia will present "Practical Ethics in Orthopaedic Practice". Dr. Apple is a member of the Academy's Committee on Ethics and has published on the subject matter.

RESIDENT RESEARCH SUPPORT: Ammar Anbari, MD has been awarded a $2,000 grant to support a bench research project studying "The Relationship Between Posterior Shoulder Capsular Tightness and SLAP Lesions".

Victor Hsu, MD has been awarded a $1,000 grant to support a review/laboratory study on "Elastic Instability, Columnar Buckling, and Orthopaedic Injury" submitted for presentation at the 2005 AAOS meeting.

ETHICS COMMITTEE: The JLS Ethics Committee has been charged to develop a position statement for publication dealing with the Pennsylvania statute requiring physicians to report possibly impaired drivers to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

RESIDENTS/FELLOWS DISSERTATIONS: The Society will sponsor residents/fellows research paper presentations on the Saturday morning following the Temple Shriners Alumni meeting.

TEMPLE SHRINERS ALUMNI RELATIONS: To be emphasized, it is the intention of The John Lachman Society to function in a cooperative and complimentary manner with the Temple Shriners Alumni. It is expected that former Temple Shriners residents who are members of The John Lachman Society will maintain their membership and support of the Alumni.


MEMBERSHIP STATUS AND RECRUITMENT: Enclosed you will find lists of the officers, board of trustees, and charter members as well as a nomination form for additional members. Your suggestions regarding prospective additions to the membership will be greatly appreciated.

COMMITTEE STRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT: The following committee chairman and co-chairman have been appointed:

Finance - Weiss and Kolmer; Fund-raising - Kelly and Torg; Communication - Torg; Ethics - Nichols and Weiss; Membership - Alburger; Research and Education - Kelly and Stitler. Volunteers for committee membership will be greatly appreciated and can be noted on the enclosed questionnaire.

FUND-RAISING: Our attorney has informed that we may begin accepting contributions in that we fully anticipate receiving 501-(c) (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. In the near future you will hear more regarding this matter.

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING: The annual business meeting/cocktail party is being planned for this November, hopefully in conjunction with the John Lachman Lecture.
