The John Lachman
Society 2005 Winter News Letter
Dear Member:
The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that the Internal Revenue
Service has determined that The John Lachman Orthopaedic Research Fund is exempt
from Federal Income Tax under section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and that
contributions to the Fund are tax deductible under Section 170 of the Code. Also, the
fund is qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devices, transfers or
gifts under section 2055, 2016, and 2522 of the Code. During the eight month
period that our application for tax exempt status was in progress, we refrained
from either soliciting or accepting contributions to The John Lachman
Orthopaedic Research Fund which has previously been incorporated as a non-profit
corporation in Pennsylvania. Clearly, this posture has changed and contributions will be
most welcome.
Membership in The John Lachman Society will be by invitation and will
include the following groups and initiation contribution levels:
1) Physician group - $5000.00 over five years;
2) Scientists and allied health
professionals - $1,250.00 over five years;
3) Friends of John Lachman -
$5,000.00 over five years.
Checks should be made payable to The John Lachman Orthopaedic Research
Fund and forwarded to P.O. Box 7283, St. Davids, PA
19087.
Once an individual has met his or her initiation contribution, he or she
will be a member in perpetuity. It is anticipated that contributions to the Fund will be
forthcoming from satisfied patients and members of industry.
The mission of The John Lachman Society is twofold: 1) to promote the
Lachman principles
of integrity, resident training, and quality patient care by various proactive means and programs;
and 2) to provide discretionary funds for the Chairman to foster and support both the
academic and research mission of the Department. Of the total contributions
received in any one calendar year, 75% will be invested in an endowment to be
determined by the Finance Committee with the approval of the Board of Trustees
and 25%, plus interest on the endowment, will be used to support the
aforementioned mission. Proposals for appropriation of funds may be initiated by the
Executive Committee,
working committees of the Society, or the Chairman and will require the
approval of either both the Chairman and 51% of the Board of Trustees or
two-thirds of the Board of Trustees.
JOHN LACHMAN LECTURE: David Apple, MD, Medical director of the Shepherd
Spine
Center in Atlanta, Georgia presented the first annual John Lachman Lecture entitled
"Practical Ethics in Orthopaedic Practice". We are happy to report
that the lecture
was timely and well received. The Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society has agreed
that this lectureship will become a permanent part of the annual meeting
itinerary.
RESIDENT RESEARCH SUPPORT: Victor Hsu, MD, a PGY-4 Temple University Resident presented
his JLS grant-supported review/laboratory study on "Elastic Instability,
Columnar Buckling and Orthopaedic Injury" at the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society annual
meeting and received the "Best Paper Award".
THE JOHN LACHMAN LIBRARY AND CONFERENCE ROOM PROJECT: The Department of
Orthopaedic offices on the fifth and sixth floors of the Tioga Outpatient
Building are scheduled for a major renovation that will include enlargement of
the current
Conference Room and Library. Although not finalized, it is proposed that the John Lachman
Research Fund and the Temple-Shriners Alumni provide supplementary funds to those of the
Health Sciences Center to ensure that the conference area has state of the art
audio-visual capabilities and furnishings, that the library area include appropriate digital
capabilities and resources, and that the area be properly secured.
ETHICS COMMITTEE: The Ethics Committee reports that a position paper on
"Legislating Breach of Confidentiality in Medical Settings" has been
developed and will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees prior to being
submitted for publication.
RESIDENTS/FELLOWS DISSERTATIONS: The JLS sponsored residents/fellows research paper
presentations will be held on Saturday morning, May 14, 2005 followed by a
Society luncheon meeting. Hopefully, John Lachman will be in attendance.
WEBPAGE: The John Lachman Society webpage is a reality and can be
entered at www.iohnlachmansocietv.org.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Phil Alburger, Chairman
of the Membership Committee, would appreciate nominations for JLS membership. Enclosed is
a list of Society
